Originally constructed in the early 1980s, Concourse D was designed primarily for smaller regional aircraft and is the narrowest concourse at ATL, with limited circulation space and smaller gate hold areas. To address growing passenger volumes and accommodate modern aircraft, the airport launched a large‑scale redevelopment effort to expand and modernize the facility.
The program widens the concourse from approximately 60 feet to nearly 99 feet and extends the structure by roughly 288 feet, significantly increasing passenger circulation space and operational capacity. The expansion includes larger hold rooms, expanded restrooms, improved concession areas, upgraded building systems, and additional passenger amenities.
A key feature of the project is the use of modular construction techniques in which large structural modules are fabricated offsite and transported to the airport for installation during overnight construction windows. This approach allows the concourse to remain operational during construction while minimizing disruption to airport operations and airline schedules.
When complete, the widened concourse will significantly increase seating capacity, expand passenger circulation areas, and provide a modernized terminal environment capable of supporting future growth in passenger traffic and aircraft operations.
APR supported Ricondo & Associates by providing aviation estimating expertise and cost intelligence associated with large-scale terminal expansion initiatives at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
APR’s estimating professionals contributed aviation construction cost insights derived from comparable airport terminal modernization and concourse expansion projects nationwide. This experience supported cost modeling activities associated with passenger hold rooms, circulation areas, concessions, building systems, and airline operational spaces typical of major concourse expansion programs.
APR personnel also supported development of structured estimating documentation and program reporting associated with aviation capital improvement initiatives. These efforts included preparation and coordination of estimating reports, quality assurance reviews of project documentation, and implementation of consistent reporting standards across complex airport capital programs.
APR’s work incorporated aviation cost benchmarking, historical cost analysis, and market trend evaluation to support planning-level cost modeling and program decision-making. By applying knowledge derived from comparable airport infrastructure programs across the United States, APR provided practical estimating insight relevant to terminal expansion delivered within an active airport operational environment.
