2024 Construction Commodity Escalation Study

Time Frame

2024

APR prepared a construction commodity escalation study to help airport clients understand how material cost movement during 2024 could affect planning and procurement decisions. The study focused on year-to-date price changes, broader market movement, and the practical implications of long procurement durations, tariff activity, and labor constraints.

The goal was to move beyond raw market observation and provide a more useful basis for owner action.

APR researched material pricing trends from January through October 2024, analyzed cost movement across sampled construction materials, and prepared a report that connected those findings to planning and procurement strategy. APR also translated the analysis into conclusions about risk concentration and suggested responses for owners managing active or upcoming work.

The study combined data, interpretation, and decision-oriented recommendations into a single reference document.

  • Owners gained a clearer understanding of how material cost movement from January through October 2024 could affect active and upcoming construction work
  • Planning teams received actionable insight into high-risk escalation categories rather than only raw market data
  • Procurement discussions became more informed because long-lead materials, tariff-related concerns, and labor shortages were tied directly to cost risk
  • The study gave DFW a documented basis for adjusting strategy on future work affected by volatile construction pricing
  • Stakeholders benefited from a more focused view of where escalation pressure was strongest and where attention was most needed
  • Research findings were translated into practical recommendations that supported planning and procurement decisions
